Flu iskilling us. The usual response to the annual flu is not enough to fight againstthe risks we currently face, 21 (say) nothing of preparing us for an even deadlierwidespread flu that most experts agree 22 (come) in the future. Yes, we have anannual vaccine (疫苗), andeveryone 23 (qualify) should get it without question. The reality, however, isthat less than half Americans get the flu vaccines. And the flu vaccines wehave are only 60% effective in the best years and 10% effective in the worst years.We urgently need a much 24 (effective ) flu vaccine.
In theU.S. alone, seasonal flu can cause up to 36 million infections, three-quartersof a million hospitalizations and 56,000 deaths. We are not investing theresources needed to protect ourselves, our loved 25 and our communities.
Why not?We haven't been hit by 26 truly destructive widespread disease in a long time.So as individuals, we let down our guard as our leaders quietly defundanddistaff the services we need to protect us.
